"Les Caprices de Goya" is Salvador Dali's reworking of Francisco Goya's "Los Caprichos" series, published more than 200 years earlier. Goya's "Los Caprichos" poked fun at Spanish social conventions of the time. The series of 80 aquatint etchings was published in 1799, but was blocked from sale shortly afterwards. Goya's critique of the Catholic Church nearly had him called before the Spanish Inquisition. Only 27 copies were sold. In 1973, added his own surrealist touches to Goya's images and released the series in 1977.
