Lot Details

This lot includes five lithographs from the "Biblia Sacra" suite, plates 3-9, 3-19, 4-3, 4-5, and 4-8. Each sheet measures 19 x 13.75 inches (48.3 x 34.9 cm). Each print is signed and dated in the plate and is stamped by the Salvador Dalí Archives, Ltd. or The Salvador Dali Gallery and signed in pencil by the authenticator on the verso. Some prints include mixed media such as offset lithography, continuous tone lithography, silkscreen, and/or varnishes and metallic inks.

The full "Biblia Sacra" portfolio includes 105 prints in five volumes, making it Dalí's largest published work. Commissioned by Dalí's friend and patron Guiseppe Albaretto, "Biblia Sacra" was published in 1969 after six years of creating original watercolors for the suite. Albaretto, who also acted as the book's editor, saw the project as a means of bringing Dalí back to Catholicism. The images draw alternately from the Bible and ancient mythology and showcase the range of Dalí's technique. In some of the prints, Dalí utilized a method that he called "bulletism," where he shot ink-filled "bullets" onto sheets of paper using an antique gun called an arquebus.
