Lot Details

"Day and Night" (2011) is a stunning large-scale oil fantasy-scape by celebrated Contemporary Korean artist Ryu Junhwa. This work is painted in warm, rich hues, precisely applied in many translucent layers of paint, and is filled with iconography symbolic of celebration and life, which characterizes Junhwa's consistent themes. Junhwa paints this this surreal narrative with an emphasis on the feminine realm and fertility. Water surrounds a stylized female figure representing Mother Earth whose hair turns into verdant peaked mountaintops. She stands holding a small bird in one hand which she gazes at serenely, with an owl observing the scene, perched on a nearby flower. Birds are a reoccurring theme in Junhwa's oeuvre, painted as messengers from the gods sent down to enlighten the world. This painting measures 57.85 x 57.85 inches, is unframed and in excellent condition.
