Ryan McGinley (b. 1977) is best known for his intimate portraits and street photographs of life in New York City during the 1990s. Specifically, McGinley photographs youth culture, and the individuals considered to be on the fringes of society such as skateboarders, musicians and fellow artists. His works not only inspired a massive, perhaps even cult following, but they have also earned him esteemed awards including the 2003 Photographer of the Year from American Photo Magazine and the Young Photographer Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in 2007. McGinley has been compared to other photographers who are considered the auteurs of their generations, such as Nan Goldin and Larry Clark. His works reveal a sense of self-awareness and a gleeful disorder that captures the zeitgeist of New York City’s subcultures in the 1990s.
