Lot Details

In 1980 Lichtenstein returned to the subject of the American Indian, for the first time since 1950. However, this time, since he had just finished his "Surrealist Series" in 1978, those ideas found their way into this new group of prints. In this tongue-in-cheek etching "Head with Feathers and Braid," Lichtenstein creates an abstract portrait from various objects and forms: a feather, braid, and a wooden sculpture that is heavily patterned with wood grain. The portrait appears to sit in a barren landscape which brings to mind the Catalan landscapes used by Dali. Lichtenstein enjoyed using art historical clichés as if letting the viewer in on a private joke.

This print very rarely appears at auction.
