This 2007 piece by Ron Arad reflects the artist's ongoing interest in testing the boundary between sculpture and furniture. When closed, the piece is a box of black steel; when opened with the use of a simple kit, the box opens into a remarkable chair with a gleaming mirrored steel interior. With its reflective surfaces and unique hinged mechanism, "Box in Four Movements" is an example of Arad's technically innovative and visually stunning design work.

Ron Arad (b. 1951) is an influential British industrial designer and architect known for his playful, inventive use of materials and his sophisticated incorporation of digital processes. Arad attended the art academy in Jerusalem before going on to study under Peter Cook and Bernard Schumi at London’s Architectural Association School of Architecture, where he met Peter Wilson, Nigel Coates and Zaha Hadid. While Arad works primarily with metal, the 1990s saw the artist beginning to use wood and different textiles. Around the same time, Arad started to expand the field of sculptural furniture. Arad has worked for many well-known brands-- including Alessi, Swatch, and Kartell-- as a designer and as an architect. After teaching as a professor of product design in Vienna from 1994 to 1997, Arad was Professor of Furniture Design at the Royal College of Art in London from 1997 to 2009. Ron Arad lives and works in London.
