Ron Arad, born in 1951 in Tel Aviv, is a British industrial designer and architect. At 20 he started his studies at the art academy in Jerusalem. In 1973 he continued his studies under Peter Cook and Bernard Schumi at London’s Architectural Association School of Architecture, where he met Peter Wilson, Nigel Coates and Zaha Hadid. While most of his designs are made in metal, he started in the 1990s to use wood and different textiles. Around the same time, Arad started to expand the field of sculptural furniture. This “Blo Void” is a fantastic example of his fusion of sculpture, with the use of polished mirror and reflective woven aluminum, and a simple rocking chair. Arad works for different companies, including Alessi, Swatch, and Kartell, as a designer as well as with Alison Brooks as an architect (Ron Arad Associates Ltd.). After teaching as a professor of product design in Vienna from 1994 to 1997, Arad was Professor of Furniture Design at the Royal College of Art in London from 1997 to 2009. Ron Arad lives and works in London.
