Lot Details

This work measures 44.9 x 57.5 inches (114 x 146.1 cm), is in excellent condition, framed to larger dimensions, and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Germana Matta Ferrari dated 26 Avril 2012 .

"Sans Titre" was created around 1960-1962, and is representative of the expressive style of Chilean born, Latin American artist Roberto Matta. This oil on canvas continues the artist’s unique style informed by the unconscious automatism of his Surrealist background and biomorphic figuration. In many of these works, Matta compositionally fuses organic and non-organic forms to show the creative-destructive cycle of the human-machine interface and specifically, war. Matta wanted to “make the invisible visible” by suppressing the conscious mind and allowing a subconscious reality to surface – in many cases this includes eroticized scenes of abjection and horror.

A Chilean-born artist who worked with many of the leading avant-garde artists – Le Corbusier, Salvador Dali, Andre Breton, Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy – Matta is widely considered to be one of the most important Latin American artists of the 20th century. Matta has been honored with a number of major surveys of his work including shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1955), and in Stockholm (1958), Bologna (1963), Mexico City (1964), Berlin (1970), Paris (1971), London (1977) and Tokyo (1986).
