Lot Details

Sheet size: 35 3/8 x 27 inches (90 x 68.6 cm)

One of Rauschenberg's earliest prints, dating from 1962 and mimicking the assemblage techniques he was using in his original compositions where he would create collages from trash found on the streets in New York City. The idea of disparate images all jumbled together, was, the artist felt, an accurate representation of what it felt like to look around in a big city, hence the title "Urban." The print incorporates images taken from news media, such as an American flag and baseball players, anticipating the Pop Art movement.

Extremely rare. Another impression is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY.
