Lot Details

This exquisite work by Robert Rauschenberg shows the late artist at his best- each one is a visual poem. This piece includes a piece of paper that can be taken out and unfolded to reveal a map.

Twombly and Rauschenberg attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina. In the summer of 1951, the two students traveled together in Italy and North Africa in 1951–53. The experience was pivotal for both artists: Twombly moved from New York to Rome; Rauscheneberg was inspired to create a series of collages using bits and pieces of fabric; feathers; and snippets of newspapers found on the street. These early works became the basis of his ongoing explorations into the layering of images and different materials. In 1992, the atelier Styria Studio approached Rauschenberg about reproducing the rare collages. Rauschenberg picked out his favorite works and Styria reproduced every aspect of each collage - from the drawing smudges to remnants of glue and even attaching feathers where needed. The process was exacting and required several years to complete to the artist's satisfaction.
