Lot Details

Cy Twombly attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina with Robert Rauschenberg, and the two students traveled together to Italy and North Africa from the summer of 1951 until 1953. The experience was pivotal for both artists: Twombly moved from New York to Rome and Rauschenberg was inspired to create a series of collages using bits and pieces of fabric, feathers, and snippets of newspapers found on the street. These early works became the basis of his ongoing explorations into the layering of images and different materials. In 1992, the atelier Styria Studio approached Rauschenberg about reproducing the rare collages. Rauschenberg picked out his favorite works and Styria Studio reproduced every aspect of each collage - from the drawing smudges to remnants of glue and even attaching feathers where needed. The process required several years to complete to the artist's satisfaction. This exquisite works show the late artist at his best, and each work in the series is a visual poem.
