Lot Details

"Post Rally" is one of Robert Rauschenberg's most famous prints. It is in the collections of both the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. Dating from 1965, it demonstrates the artist's move away from Abstract Expressionism through the use of photos lifted directly from the media. The layering of images is reminiscent of the collages the artist was making during this period, from objects found on the streets of New York City.

"Post Rally" is Rauschenberg's 1960's snapshot of America, with its images of President Lyndon Johnson on television (who had recently become President following the assassination of President Kennedy) as well as photos of various sports figures playing baseball, etc. Later on, Rauschenberg would abandon stone lithographic printing saying, "The 21st century is no time to be drawing on stones."

RARE - has not come up to auction since 2006.
