Lot Details

Part of the culture of artists during this time was to smoke cigarettes while creating their works of art. In particular, it was avante-garde to smoke cigarettes from different countries, like the Gauloises from France or St. Michel cigarettes from Belgium.

Motherwell was so taken with the design of the St. Michel image that he created three collages using their emblem as a template (St. Michel I, II, and III). The most widely known image of these three is the St. Michel III.

In his collages especially, Motherwell intended to incorporate some of his everyday life into his images; St. Michel III is no exception. A lithograph and screenprint on handmade paper, this piece incorporates both Motherwell’s interest in cultures abroad, and his propensity to smoke. This piece also includes the blindstamp of the publisher.

This piece can be found in galleries across the world, as well as at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
