A poignant lift-ground etching and aquatint on white Auvergne a la Main Richard de Mas handmade paper by Robert Motherwell, perhaps the most famous member of the New York School of Abstract Expressionists.
This gestural print is entitled "Athena", after the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, the arts, industry, justice and skill, who was also the favorite child of Zeus.
Robert Motherwell was a founding member of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, whose members included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. He was the only one of the original Abstract Expressionists to enthusiastically embrace printmaking early on, collaborating with some of the major printmaking workshops of the era. Robert Motherwell, who was once married to Helen Frankenthaler, is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.


It is hand signed and hand numbered in pencil lower right. It is 1 color printed in 1 run from 1 copper plate ochre-plate.
It is elegantly framed in gilt colored wood with double black linen matting and beveled edges.
FRAMED it measures approx 20.25 (horizontal) by 23.5 inches.(vertical). The sheet measures 20 1/8 by 17 5/8, and the plate size is 7 7/8 x 9 7/8 inches.

Not examined outside of frame but appears to be in excellent condition.
