Lot Details

Robert Indiana is the most famous living Pop artist. At 85 years old, he is enjoying a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, which opened in late September 2013. In the 1960s, the artist's LOVE image became a symbol for the "make love not war" counterculture movement. However, in the past 45 years, the LOVE symbol has transcended its original meaning to have even greater importance, both as an art historical trope and as a global signifier. The Book of Love portfolio is the largest graphic oeuvre ever created by the artist, with 12 individually signed LOVE screenprints, as well as 12 individually signed poems written by the artist himself, each with a silkscreen embossment of the LOVE symbol.
