In the 1960s, Robert Indiana's LOVE image became a symbol for the "make love not war" counterculture movement. However, in the past 45 years, the LOVE symbol has transcended its original meaning to have even greater importance, both as an art historical trope and a global signifier. This version of the LOVE screenprint in different shades of grey is from "The Book of Love" portfolio, the largest graphic oeuvre the artist ever created. One of the most famous living Pop artists, Indiana was honored in 2013 with a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
