This work is from Cottingham's "American Signs" series. This series exemplifies the artist's aesthetic, which is recognized as a distinctive combination of both photorealism and abstraction. He has described himself as a “closet abstractionist” so to speak, due to the manner in which he selects objects, signs in this case, to focus on and contextualize. Cottingham is known to create series, the most recent of which is called “An American Alphabet,” in which he depicts neon signs, specifically those that appear to date back to the 1940s and '50s. In these works, Cottingham takes what may have previously been overlooked, as everyday objects often are, and transforms them into fine art.
