Lot Details

The presence of Americana characterizes the vast majority of Cottingham’s work. His works often reflect a proficient understanding of the interplay between light and perspective. In this way, Cottingham assigns a prominence to illumination that serves to underscore details of the ordinary that normally exist unnoticed.

Robert Cottingham (B. 1935, Brooklyn, NY) creates Americana paintings, stimulated by the nation’s urban terrain of tightness and intensity. Cottingham’s signature, closely cropped subject matter includes metropolitan architecture and graphically lit signage. Through tapering his subject’s borders, Cottingham allows viewers to see beyond their eyes and into their minds. Cottingham studied advertising and graphic design at the Pratt Institute in New York, NY (BFA, 1963). Furthermore, Cottingham has almost forty years of countless solo exhibition experience, reaching celebrated galleries and institutions worldwide. More recently, his work has been exhibited in Galerie Patrice Trigano, Paris, France (2005); Forum Gallery, New York, NY (2004); Forum Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2001).
