These three iconic images of celebrity artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Run DMC capture the art scene and street culture of downtown Manhattan in the 1980's and early 1990's.

Ricky Powell (b. 1961) is a contemporary American photographer best known for his portraits of celebrities and famous New Yorkers of the '80s and '90s. In 1985, Powell toured with the Beastie Boys and Run DMC. His photographs soon earned him the title of Def Jam’s unofficial chronicler. From 1990-96, Powell interviewed musicians and celebrities on his public-access television show “Rappin’ with the Rickster." Powell has published four books of photography, and his work has appeared in the New York Times, the New York Post, the Daily News, the Village Voice, Time, Newsweek, VIBE, The Source, and Rolling Stone.
