Powell is well-known for his photographs of artists, musicians, and celebrities including Grace Jones, Debbie Mazur, and Madonna. He also portrays anonymous residents of the East Village, as in "Old Ladies." His photographs capture the burgeoning art scene and street culture of downtown Manhattan in the 1980's and early 1990's.

Ricky Powell is an American Contemporary Photographer and infamous downtown New York City personality. He has worked as a bike messenger, Frozade vendor, dog-walker, columnist, substitute teacher, Public Access cable TV host, and author. Powell was born in 1961 in New York. He received in B.S. in Physical Education from Hunter College. In 1985 Powell toured with the Beastie Boys and Run DMC. His photographs soon earned him the title of Def Jam’s unofficial chronicler. From 1990-1996 Powell interviewed several musicians and celebrities on his show “Rappin’ with the Rickster”. Powell has published four books of photography and in several publications including The New York Times, the New York Post, the Daily News, The Village Voice, Time, Newsweek, VIBE, The Source, and Rolling Stone.
