Lot Details

In the 2009 installation ‘The Kids Table’, exhibited at Otero Plassart in Los Angeles, CA, conceptual artist Richard Jackson demonstrated his wit and intrigue in the over the top presentation of a vivid Neon and Glass chandelier that hung over a table as paint was pumped through clear tubes and splattered on the table and ground. Offered here is the prototype for that chandelier. Constructed with neon lights that form the face of smiling, pigtailed girl, and interspersed by clear glass candelabra, the chandelier illuminates with neon lights that animate the girl’s blinking face.
This work is presented with the necessary electronics in a box that measures 7 x 43 x 7 inches. This work can be presented without the paint or can be installed to run the paint through, upon request.

California artist Richard Jackson (b. 1939) continually produces bold works that push the bounds of familiar artistic conventions. Demonstrating an interest with the painting process, Jackson explores style and medium by playing with subject, technique, and presentation, creating unique works with an element of shock, humor, and interaction. Born in Sacramento, CA, Jackson studied art and engineering at Sacramento State College in 1959-1961 before moving to Los Angeles in 1968 where he taught sculpture and new forms at UCLA from 1989-1994. In 2013, the Orange County Museum of Art organized the first major retrospective of Jackson’s work, ‘Richard Jackson: Ain’t Painting a Pain’, which is currently on view and will travel to the Museum Villa Stuck, Munich, Germany and S.M.A.K., Ghent, Belgium later this year. His work has also been the subject of recent solo exhibitions at Galerie Parisa Kind, Frankfurt, Germany (2012); David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2011); Rennie Collection, Vancouver, Canada (2010); and Hauser & Wirth, Zurich, Switzerland (2009). Jackson lives and works in Sierra Madre, CA.
