Lot Details

This piece is framed in the artist's frame, which is 52 x 43 inches (132.1 x 109.2 cm).

Richard Butler (b. 1956, Hampton Court , Middlesex , England) attended the Epsom School of Art (now known as the Surrey Institute of Art & Design University College), and went on to receive international acclaim for his paintings, which have been shown at exhibitions in major cities worldwide including New York, Miami and Florence, Italy. Butler, who is also known for being the lead singer of post-punk/New Wave band the Psychedelic Furs, specializes in single subject portraits to which he adds elements of strange, surreal fantasy that reveal the sitter’s inner state through visual illusion. Each work is a multifaceted contemporary Mise-en-scène that simultaneously reveals and raises questions about the subject, identifies and makes us contemplate the universal struggles of the human condition, and undoubtedly leaves an intense impression on its viewer.

Butler currently lives and works in New York.
