Lot Details

"Obama" (2009), is one of the most visually exciting and culturally relevant of the bold series of Pop-art inspired oil on canvas portraits of the world's famous icons by major young Chinese Contemporary artist, Ren Zhenyu (China b. 1976). Ren's unexpected spectrum of bold colors and his signature staccato brush strokes used here to depict the newly re-elected U.S. President Barack Obama is simply the artist at his best, creating a unique, dynamic and celebratory depiction of Obama. Ren is known the world over for his oil on canvas portraits of Eastern and Western cultural icons from the past several decades, including Che Guevara, Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, Chairman Mao, Albert Einstein, British artists Damien Hirst and Lucien Freud, among others, all of which are highly sought-after by collectors on both the primary and secondary global markets. His influences range from Yan Pei Ming, to Vincent van Gogh, to Lucien Freud and Jenny Saville. This painting measures 39.37 x 35.43 inches (100 x 90 cm) and is in excellent condition and is one of only two portraits that the artist has painted of Obama to date.

Born in China in 1976, Ren Zhenyu graduated in 1999 from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Art. His work has been exhibited in solo and group Museums shows world wide, most recently at The Shanghai Art Museum, China. He is represented by prestigious galleries in China, Europe and the U.K. and his paintings are held in select private and public collections in the U.S, U.K, Australia, Singapore, Europe and throughout Asia. The artist lives and works in China.
