Lot Details

"Creating New Life"' (neue Leben zu Schaffen) (2012) is new, stunning watercolor on paper by internationally acclaimed Chinese Contemporary artist Ren Rong. Here Ren has cut away the negative space of the painting, and floats the painting as framed, allowing the shadows and spatial tension created to give the work a three dimensional effect. This work comes directly to artnet Auctions from the Studio of the artist, Germany, measures 31.8 x 27.9 inches (63 x 45 cm) unframed, is slightly larger as framed and in excellent condition.

Ren's internationally recognized oeuvre is grounded in the conflation of the human figure and flora, as seen here, where a hand acts as a tree of life, from which blooms both colorful flowers and Ren's imaginary floramorphic “plant people”, which he derives from traditional Chinese folk images and paper cutouts. Ren's works poignantly denote humankind's struggle to break free from their current status to a new positive, fertile and happy one.

Ren Rong was born in 1960 and received his formal degrees in painting at The Fine Arts Department of Nanjing Art Institute from 1982 to 1986, and also studied at the Düsseldorf National Academy of Art from 1989 to 1992. In 1993, he was granted an art scholarship by Germany's Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Culture in 1993 and was awarded Welberg City Art Prize in 1994. The next year he established "Ren Rong Modern Art Studio" in Songzhuang, Beijing. In 1996 he was invited by German Bonn Modern Art Gallery for the planning of an exhibition tour themed as "China!–Modern Uygure". He was appointed as Guest Professor of Hamburg Academy of Plastic Arts in 2000 when he also established a Ren Rong Modern Art Studio in Bonn, Germany in 2007. The artist lives between Bonn, Germany and Beijing, China.
