Lot Details

Created circa 1950, this vibrant oil and pastel work on paper, ‘Jungle’, demonstrates the distinctive style of Italian born, American painter Remo Michael Farruggio. Presenting a bold mix of representational and abstracted elements through rich and expressive coloring, ‘Jungle’ conveys the look and feel of an exotic setting inspired by his travels throughout Mexico.

Born in Palermo, Sicily, Modern artist Remo Michael Farruggio (1904-1981) is known for his incredibly diverse style and his skills as a colorist. Often described as lyrical abstractions, Farrrugio’s expressive works exhibit a fusion of influences, incorporating elements of Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, and Pop within a lexicon entirely his own. Farruggio attended classes at the legendary National Academy of Design and the Educational Alliance, where he met other prominent artists of the day, including Robert Motherwell and Chaim Gross, with whom he would remain lifelong friends. In addition, Farruggio attended the Beaux Arts School and studied under painter Abraham Bogdanov at the Industrial Arts School.

With the onset of the Great Depression, the artist took part in both the Works Progress Administration and the Artists Project. In 1936, he became one of only two WPA artists to hold a solo show at the prestigious avant-garde Julian Levi Gallery in New York. In the years to follow, Farruggio traveled extensively throughout Mexico, the United States and Italy, where he gained recognition for his artistic talents and exhibited his work frequently. Ferruggio would go on to have over 20 solo shows and 25 group shows, winning several important awards along the way.

The work is unframed, but it is taped with masking tape to its original, somewhat disingegrating mid century matting with the 1950s price to preserve provenance. There is some expected craquelure to the outer edges of the paper around the original matting, which will frame out beautifully.
