Lot Details

This humorous drawing illustrates Pettibon’s trademark interest in the interplay of image and text. A nameless man, though shrinking in height, stands tall in defiance of the large arrow that pushes down on him and that the work’s text ascribes to the force of gravity. His confident and animated facial expression takes on deeper significance in conjunction with viewers’ seeing the rest of his body and the accompanying text. As the perceived force of the arrow pushes down on the man, he becomes “only the more ardent in the pursuit,” according to the text, which interacts with the image of the man in order to achieve the work’s double entendre and sexual humor.
