Lot Details

This large-scale abstract painting is a major example of the dynamic monochromatic abstract paintings that have made Contemporary Persian artist Pooya Aryanpour critically acclaimed world-wide. The artist's distinctive style is characterised by the use of white shapes set against dark backgrounds which conceptually represent symbolic calligraphy. These works create a sense of suspense and mystery and, as Pooya himself has put it, represent "accidental events". This painting belongs to the artist so-called "Black Period" of paintings, where his base color is a deep black, created by super saturated applications of deep greens, blues or purples.

This visually dynamic black and white painting creates a dialogue between the formal horizontal rows of white dashed brush stokes at top, that are in contrast to the diaphanous white circles that float through the lower portion of the canvas, like rings of smoke, and are almost mistaken for a photograph in their three dimensional treatment. The balance and harmony created here as well as the exciting tensions between elements and negative space makes this large scale painting one of the artist’s most sublime yet powerful works, to date. This work is unframed and in perfect condition.

Born in Tehran in 1971, Pooya Aryanpour studied at the School of Plastic Arts and at the Azad University, Tehran. Pooya has had select Museum and Gallery exhibitions in Europe, The Middle East and the US.
