Framed 16.5 x 13.75 in

This untitled work by Philip Taaffe exemplifies the artist's unique approach to abstraction, combining an intricate use of color with bold forms rhythmically arranged across the surface. With this mixed media and gouache on paper executed in 1995, Taaffe allows an abstracted pattern to hover over the composition, playing with the visual optics so often explored in his work.

Known for his evocative works exploring floating pigments, marbling, and complex abstract designs, Philip Taaffe (b. 1955) engages in a dialogue with the history of art while rejecting current expectations surrounding contemporary art. He employs a range of techniques, drawing inspiration from extensive world traveling, in order to evoke visual experiences from the viewer. Taaffe was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and attended Cooper Union in New York. The artist has exhibited at numerous venues internationally including recent shows at Gagosian Gallery (New York, NY), The Portalakis Collection (Athens, Greece), Jablonka Galerie (Cologne, Germany), and Thomas Ammann Fine Art (Zurich, Switzerland), among others.
