Select-O-Mat (Variation No. 15), 1974
Acrylic on canvas with acrylic clear laquer
Signed, dated and titled on verso
130 x 90 cm

Peter Phillips 'Select-o-Mat' series from the 1970s explored ideas of consumerism, product marketing, and pop imagery through a bright palette and an abstract array of geometric and surreal forms. Painted in 1974, 'Select-o-Mat (Variation No. 15)', this acrylic on canvas work with clear acrylic lacquer exemplifies Philips iconic style and ability to render a multidimensional surface through his detailed abstractions.

British artist Peter Phillips is one of the pioneers of the British Pop Art movement. He met David Hockney, Allen Jones and Kitaj when studying at the Royal College of Art. In 1964, he moved to New York when he was awarded the Harkness Fellowship and there, he exhibited alongside Warhol and Lichtenstein. His artworks reflect his interest for the American culture, using everyday iconography mixed with a dynamic montage style inspired by advertisement. Peter Phillips’s art has been on show in many major museums around the world.

Canvas not totally flat at the corners. The artist used a normal frame, not a stretcher. The mounting is original. Minimal losses in the corners.
