Peter Hujar, Robert L. in Maryland, 1978. Vintage gelatin silver print, image size is 14.75 x 14.75 inches (37.5 x 37.5 cm); sheet size is 16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 50.8 cm). Signed on verso.

Peter Hujar (1934-1987) grew up in Trenton, New Jersey and moved to New York City to launch his career as a photographer. He achieved success working for magazines and in advertising and fashion photography. Hujar’s style was wide-ranging, and his work shows his innate ability to transition fluidly between styles depending on his subjects and audience. For his professional work, he could create composed, even serene portraits. In the evenings, Hujar took candid, dynamic, sometimes disturbing shots of his friends and acquaintances in East Village art scene of the 70s and 80s. Many of his subjects were or went on to become major players in the world of literature, art and music. Hujar died of AIDS complications in 1987, but left behind a powerful legacy through a profound body of work.
