Sheet 53 x 38 cm
Peter Doig is regarded as one of the most important painters of our time. His work explores modern landscapes, depicting environments where the urban and rural worlds interact. His approach to painting is highly rigorous, using texture, surface and color in innovative ways. Many of his paintings originate from images found in popular media, like magazines, postcards and brochures. Doig paints, draws, cuts and alters these images, producing several versions of the work - often including printed versions. In the early 1980s, Doig began experimenting with prints. Due to the layering process of his painting technique, he found color printing appealing and quickly incorporated it into his body of work.
Doig draws inspiration from artists such as Edvard Munch, with whom his work shares a sense of isolation and threat. This lonely figure sitting by a river evokes Munch’s style.
