Lot Details

Peter Doig's (b.1959) work explores modern landscapes, depicting environments where the urban and rural worlds interact. His approach to painting and printmaking is highly rigorous, using texture, surface, and color in innovative ways. Many of his works originate from images found in popular media, like magazines, postcards, and brochures. Doig paints, draws, cuts, and alters these images, producing several versions of the work-often including printed versions. In the early 1980s, Doig began experimenting with prints. Due to the layering process of his painting technique, Doig found color printing very appealing, and quickly incorporated it into his body of work. This print exemplifies Doig’s natural environments that allow room for imaginative interpretation.

Doig, who was born in Edinburgh, is a leading contemporary artist beloved by critics, collectors and his fellow artists alike. His specialty is photo-based realism and his landscapes can be described as magic realism, inhabiting a space between lived experience and the imaginary. Born in Scotland and raised in Canada and Trinidad, Doig was educated in England, where he attended St. Martin’s School of Art and the Chelsea School of Art in London. Today he lives and works in Port of Spain, Trinidad. His work has been widely exhibited and collected throughout the world since the early 1980's. Notably, he was honored with a full retrospective at Tate Britain in 2008, a solo exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2011, and most recently his solo exhibition "Peter Doig: Imaginary Places" took place at the Metropolitan Arts Centre, Belfast.
