Lot Details

"In the style of a 1935 painting" (1981) is a geometric abstraction by renown American artist Paul Kelpe (1935-1985), which expresses the industrial development of his era. This work measures 26 x 15 inches (66 x 38.1 cm) and comes framed to approximate dimensions listed above. This work is stylistic of Kelpe's elaborate and structured shapes in empty space, evoking a sense of music and rhythm.

Paul Kelpe (1902-1985) was born in Germany, and studied constructivism and geometric abstraction in his early career. He immigrated to the United States in 1925 and worked with the WPA in Chicago throughout the 1930s, creating murals that departed from the non-figurative, geometric abstractions he preferred. However, Kelpe simultaneously focused on his abstract works during this time and held a landmark exhibition at Chicago's Little Gallery, which was considered to be the first abstract show of its kind in the city. Kelpe moved to New York in the late 1930s and went on to become one of the founding members of the American Abstract Artists. In his later years, the artist taught at the East Texas Teachers College in Austin, Texas.
