Print Year: 1979
Dutch artist Roelof Paul Citroen was born in Berlin in 1896. From an early age he started to experiment with photography, alongside Erwin Blumenfeld. In 1919 Citroen began studying at the Bauhaus, where he came under the instruction of Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Johannes Itten. It was around this time that he produced the renowned photo montage Metropolis (1923), which inspired Fritz Lang's classic film of the same title. In the period between 1929 and 1935 Citroen once again directed his attention to photography, in his works from this period the early influence of Blumenfeld can be felt.
