A UNIQUE piece by Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, Untitled #2, (also titled Robert #2, 1978 and "the Transformation of"), 1978. Gelatin silver print with pencil, colored pencil and ink surrounding photograph, image size is 7 x 7 inches (17.8 x 17.8 cm); on board, framed size is 19.5 x 15.5 inches (49.5 x 39.4 cm). Signed, dated and inscribed. In the original exhibition frame with original Robert Miller Gallery label (724 Fifth Avenue).

This image depicts (a possible reenactment of) a mutilation ritual. There are extensive inscriptions surrounding the image written in English in "boustrophedon" style, and partly in spiral around the image. Various hands but primarily Smith and Mapplethorpe. The writing and script surrounding the image is likely the conception of Patti Smith, but it is clearly done in collaboration. Some of the phrases are:

The Transformation of it was the transformation as (or "is")

The distress of molten cauldrons, the distress of

water down.... pure torture

They take offense at this nude....

the oldest preoccupation of many and I so create

what could I experience that could compare to this

the winds shift and our nostrils split
