Lot Details

"Plat Visage Masque Puitoise" is an extremely rare unique ceramic created by Picasso on October 11, 1947, the year after his first visit to Madoura Pottery in the town of Vallauris located on the French Riviera. It is one of the only unique works still in a private collection.

Created before the ceramics were editioned by Madoura, Picasso's hand is apparent in the expressive face in the center of this oval plate. The work also has an unprecedented provenance. It was in the personal collection of Jacqueline Roque, the artist’s second wife, whom he met while she was working at Madoura Ceramics when she was 27 years old. During the next 24 years until the artist’s death in 1973, she acted as his primary muse. Picasso never sold "Plat Visage Masque Puitoise," which was treasured by Jacqueline until her suicide in 1986. "Plat Visage Masque Puitoise" has been authenticated by Picasso's daughter Maya Widmaier-Picasso and is accompanied by a photocertficate hand signed by Widmaier-Picasso (see third photo in lot).
