The human face was a constant source of inspiration for Picasso, and many of his ceramics feature this subject. This square plaque shows a man with long hair and a feather-like, upward-curving mustache. Picasso created several other plaques with men's faces with different variations of coloring, hair, and facial hair. The plaque is made of red earthenware clay with a ground of engobe, which consists of a fine clay mixed with coloring oxides. The man's features are engraved and enhanced with oxides under a partially brushed glaze.
