Otmar Thorman was born in 1944 in Graz, Austria and began taking photographs in 1958. While his passion for photography grew rapidly, he was not able to study the discipline until ten years later in 1968 when he began attending evening classes at Stockholm School of Photographer. A year later he began working as an assistant to photographer Walter Hirsch and after a year, he left to pursue his own photography career. His work was well-received in various publications, and has since been exhibited in numerous museum and gallery shows worldwide.

Thorman’s genuine passion for the art of photography is clear in this quote from the catalogue published from his solo show at the Gallery Camera Obscura in 1979:

“In March 1977, when I for the first time was able to see an original photograph by the Czech photographer Josef Sudek, it made such an impression on me that I visited the Camera Obscura gallery daily in order to look for a few minutes at this olive green print, showing two leaves on the ground. A feeling took hold of me that it had been taken long before the beginnings of photography, somewhere in a virgin forest unseen by mankind.”
