Born in the former German Democratic Republic to a Communist family devoted to the socialist system, Norbert Bisky (b.1970) uses art to reflect and understand his upbringing. His portrayals of blond, blue-eyes, athletic, youths represent the illusion of the Germanic hero. His later work conveys darker themes also inspired by his personal history yet incorporate a wider range of influences including art history and contemporary subjects such as pornography and gay culture. Bisky studied with Georg Baselitz at Berlin’s Art College from 1994 to 1999. His work has been widely exhibited, with recent solo shows at Leo Koenig Inc., New York, NY (2012); Galerie Daniel Templon, Paris, France (2011); Galerie Charlotte Moser, Geneva, Switzerland (2010); and Galerie Crone, Berlin, Germany (2010). In 2011, the Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp, Cully, Switzerland held a retrospective of Bisky’s ten years of painting.
