“Moorish Quarters Algiers” by Noel Harry Leaver is a delicate watercolor on board, depicting a quaint street scene in the Moorish community of Algiers. Leaver often painted scenes of Mediterranean and North African life, often including traditional Arab architecture nestled within tranquil town streets. The work is signed in the lower left corner, measuring 9.75 x 6.25 inches (24.77 x 15.87 cm), is framed to larger dimensions listed approximately, and is in excellent condition.

Noel Harry Leaver was born in Austwick, Yorkshire in 1889. He was educated at St. James School and the Burnley School of art after he and his family moved to Worsthorne, near Burnley soon after his birth. Leaver showed incredible potential as an artist and won a National Scholarship to the Royal College of Art at the age of 16. At RCA, he was awarded a number of travelling scholarships which took him to Europe and North Africa. His affinity for architecture grew throughout this time, and became a significant source of inspiration throughout his career. In 1912, Leaver took up a teaching position at Halifax School of Art and in 1915, left for the Burnley School of Art, where he stayed up until the mid 1930’s.
