Nobuyoshi Araki is arguably Japan's greatest and most controversial living photographer. Well known for his erotic nudes and sensual flower studies, his work challenges taboos and unabashedly confronts complex subject matter, most markedly sex and death.
Although inspired by Japanese Shunga, his work is thematically universal, as is evident by the international acclaim it has received. In 1999, the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art held a retrospective of his photographs. The MoT chief curator Junichi Shioda described Araki’s oeuvre eloquently, stating: “Araki’s photographs are like a mirror, reflecting the reality in which we live…[this reality] includes Tokyo, a city of obscene energy and inhuman emptiness; the noisy clamor of the entertainment districts, the casual circumstances of everyday life; sensual nude women; straight-arrow businessmen; love and sex; the sky and flowers; life and death."
