Figure paintings entered Makarov's repertoire around the early 1990s. The shadowy figures of his models are placed in a space infused with light, resulting in sublime portrayals whose sensuousness issues a fictional voyeuristic distance. The visual staging of a moment in time engages the beholder, who intuitively grasps the body-language of this figure and follows the suggestion that the depiction results from a natural and unforeseen encounter.
