Lot Details

As seen in this exquisitely worked glass by Nicole Chesney entitled ‘Mien 10’, the artist’s cunning use of gradient color is characterized in the transient quality of midnight black to evening blue. Subtle texture across the surface adds a quiet energy to the entire work, allowing the eye to reflect upon the interaction of opacity and translucency created by the dissolving colors. Often inspired by the writing of French philosopher Gaston Bachelard, feelings of reverie and contemplation are exemplified in this striking piece by Chesney.

Excelling in a medium known for its interplay of light and color, artist Nicole Chesney creates stunning works of glass which weave a poetic sense wonder into forms that are at once two and three dimensional. Often employing flattened rectangles, she adds complex textures to add a visual sensuality to her work. Like a color field painter, Chesney explores meditative and evocative palettes to create pieces what maintain a dreamlike and ephemeral quality about them. The artist is a recipient of the Jutta Cuny-Frantz Foundation award and received her undergraduate education from CCAC in California and at the Massachusetts College of Art, while going on to earn her MA from the Canberra School of Art at the Australian National University. Chesney has exhibited at such international venues as the San Francisco Museum of Craft + Design (San Francisco, CA), Museum of American Glass (Millville, NJ), Gallery Sklo (Seoul, Korea), and Quadrivium Gallery (Sydney, Australia).
