Lot Details

"No Money" (2011) is a dynamic and visually loaded, figurative painting by internationally acclaimed South-East Asian Contemporary artist, Nguyen Cong Cu. The influence of graffiti and urban art upon his oeuvre is clear, as is American Pop Art and the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The artist seamlessly integrates these Western influences on his work with the language, colors, sight and sounds of traditional South-East Asian art. His works such as "No Money" speak to the rapidly changing modern-day Vietnam, to the plight of the average individual in today's society there, and to the place that his country and people now occupy in the larger global community, underscored by his ironic titles in English. This work measures 18 x 18 inches ( 45.70 x 45.70 cm) is unframed and is in excellent condition. The painting was acquired directly from the artist by the present owner and comes with a formal certificate of authenticity.

Nguyen Cong Cu was born in Hung Yen Province, Vietnam in 1969 and formally studied painting with a degree from Hanoi Industrial Fine Art College. The work of the artist has only recently been exhibited outside of his native Vietnam, including the group exhibition in Seattle, U.S: "Vietnam Now" (2005). The artist has shown in Thailand, Australia, Denmark, New York, and throughout Asia where his work is held in top Public and Private Collections. The artist presently lives and works in Hanoi, Vietnam.
