Lot Details

In Success, Naiana Kanodia is trying to show the changing lifestyles of the new Indian urban middle class. She depicts an affluent young couple toasting their recent art purchases seen in the background. This metaphor is used to illustrate the increased economic prosperity that has emerged recently throughout India.

Naina Kanodia has carved a niche for herself in contemporary Indian art as one of the few adherents of Indian L’art Naif (naïve art). She paints in the figurative style, dealing with flat bright polished surfaces with an extraordinary plethora of intricately worked details.

She has had over 20 solo shows in India and abroad, especially in London and Paris. In 1998, she was selected by the Commonwealth Institute, London to hold a solo show. In 2001, Victoria and Albert Museum, London invited her to exhibit her work and to give a demonstration of her painting techniques. She has also conducted art camps in India and abroad. She was the recipient of the Vijoo Sadwelkar Award in 2002.

One of the pioneers of the L’art Naif in India, Naina Kanodia believes that the country is standing at the crossroads of Western influence and traditional roots and customs. She captures this dichotomy on canvas, whilst adding a pictorial wit and satirical vein.

Her paintings depict the various faces of India, Lifestyles - past and present, bazaar (market) scenes, vehicles, ancient sports, beach compositions, and Indians at leisure. Her technique involves four layers of color to acquire clarity whilst avoiding gaudiness.
