Lot Details

Millard Owen Sheets (June 24, 1907 – March 31, 1989) was an American painter who was born in Pomona, California and was best known as one of the founding members of the “California Scene Painters” that subsequently influenced generations of Western painters.
Although watercolor painting was only part of Sheets’ art career, he did serve as a president of the California Water Color Society in 1946. His landscape portraits and portrayals of horses were all reminiscent of his childhood years spent at his grandfather’s horse ranch.
Throughout his life, Sheets taught at various institutions from Chouinard Art Institute to Scripps College among many other institutions, however with each experience he not only taught hundreds of students how to paint, but inspired them to emulate his style. Highlighted by a particular color palette, his compositions reflected his orientation towards personal themes and his ability to flawlessly execute his individual perceptions in the most subtle manner.
