Lot Details

Size including frame is 19.5 x 18 inches (49.5 x 45.7 cm).

This evocative work by contemporary artist Mildred Howard is executed on the glass of a repurposed window, with the window’s frame literally “framing” the resulting image. The work's male subject stands in a formal pose, gazing towards the viewer, as if for a traditional portrait; however, Howard’s unique deployment of medium and composition adds new layers of meaning. “Untitled” (2000) indicates the artist’s longstanding practice of using found objects and materials, particularly glass, to generate historically and emotionally resonant works.

Mildred Howard (b. 1945) is a contemporary American artist best known for her work in sculpture, mixed media, and installation art.
