Lot Details

'Untitled (Not Brancusi)' is a plaster sculpture by notorious appropriation artist Mike Bidlo completed in 1985. Drawing direct inspiration from Brancusi's figurative busts such as 'Mademoiselle Pogany' from 1912, Bidlo captures the clean line, abstracted style, and essence of reality so often seen in Brancusi's work.

As part of the East Village art scene of the early 80s, Mike Bidlo (B. 1953) began to appropriate modern masters by focusing on replicating the paintings of Jackson Pollock. Since then, Bidlo has continued to reexamine the most famous paintings and sculptures by 20th century artists including Léger, Warhol, Duchamp, Picasso and Man Ray, among others. As an integral part of the "appropriationist" movement, alongside other artists such as Sherrie Levine and Philip Taaffe, Bidlo explores notions of authorship and originality with his work. Currently, Mike Bidlo is represented by Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich.
