This set of two pristine nickel-plated sculptures by Miguel Berrocal (1933-2006) – each numbered and in their original boxes from Berrocal's studio – are superb examples of Berrocal’s renowned puzzle works. Inspired by his mathematical and architectural studies, Berrocal was fascinated with both the external and interior composition of sculpture. He focused much of his career on the design, treatment, and perception of classical forms. Providing a sculptural presence to individual elements, Berrocal establishes an abstract and symbolic language that when connected, shape a recognizable whole.

Miguel Berrocal (1933-2006) is a Spanish artist who works primarily in abstracted sculpture. Having studied mathematics and architecture at the University of Madrid and later fine art in Paris and Italy, Berrocal is known for his puzzle sculptures, which can be deconstructed in form and read as individual pieces or as a whole. Generally choosing biblical, mythological, or literary icons for his subjects, Berrocal breaks down our traditions understanding of classical form through his sculptural arrangements of interlocking parts. Berrocal’s work has been exhibited throughout the world, including solo shows of his work at Lorenzelli Arte, Milan, Italy (2006); Galería Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain (2004); Die Galerie, Frankfurt, Germany (2003); and Institut Valencià d'Art Modern, Valencia, Spain (2002). A museum dedicated to his work was founded in his hometown of Malaga, Spain. Berrocal is also the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
