Mickalene Thomas uses the imagery of the black power movement and 1970's blaxploitation to explore the archetype of the black female in America today. Known for her complex paintings composed of acrylic, enamel, and rhinestones, Thomas expands upon notions of beauty by combining elements of pop art and contemporary imagery. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute in 2000 and her MFA from Yale University in 2002. The artist has exhibited extensively with recent shows at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (Brooklyn, NY), Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo, JP), and National Portrait Gallery (Washington, DC), among others. Thomas is currently represented by Lehmann Maupin in New York, Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago, and Susanne Vielmetter Projects in Los Angeles.
